8 Things you should know before traveling to Curaçao

Curaçao is a very attractive island and is emerging as one of the world's top island destinations. The island, which is part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, is a lesser Antilles country located in the southern region of the Caribbean sea and is just 65km north of Venezuela.

But before heading to this island paradise, there are a few things to consider and prepare for. Below, we cover the basics of everything you need to know before heading to Curacao.


Passport

To enter Curaçao, you will need a passport valid for at least six months after your intended stay. This is required from all foreign nationals who wish to enter the island.


Visa

Canadian, USA, British, EU, and Australian nationals are not required to have a visa for Curaçao for stays up to 90 days within a 180 day period. Dutch and US nationals can stay for up to 180 days within a year without a visa provided that you have all necessary documents which includes a properly filled out immigration card. Other nationalities not mentioned above are advised to contact the nearest Dutch Embassy to check for Curaçao visa requirements

Vaccines

There are different routine vaccines that are required for each country depending on where you’re going. Check with your doctor to find out which vaccinations you might possibly need before traveling to the Caribbean.


Currency

All major shops accept credit cards; cash is useful for those who want to make purchases at the open market. However, most Curacao natives still prefer cash transactions. The US dollar also commonly circulates on the island so most establishments accept this as well ­ but the exchange rate may vary. Most gas stations around the island do not accept credit cards. The best payment option would be to pay in cash or debit at most.

Weather

Curaçao has a nice, warm, climate year-round and is a dream location for anyone looking to lay around at the beach. For tourists coming from colder climates, it is important to pack light-weight clothing. Curaçao doesn’t really have a rainy season, although it is common to have scattered showers between September and February. There’s one thing you shouldn’t worry about and that is hurricanes. Curaçao lies outside of the hurricane belt!


Language

The official language of the island is Dutch and Papiamento, which is a mix of Latin American languages (mostly Portuguese and Spanish) native to the Caribbean. However, English and Spanish are widely spoken in Curaçao.

Voltage

The most common voltage in Curacao is 120V. So for some appliances, special adapters are required. Sockets of American­ style are common. If your appliances require an adaptor, these are usually available upon request from most establishments.


Transportation

There are taxis and buses to take you to your desired spots. However, the buses on the island don’t really follow a strict schedule and usually drive by on random points during the day.
